Top Ten Designs On the Cheap
Bradford Panels — These modular structures are perfect for creating spaces. With tension fabric stretched over tube steel, our free-standing panels can serve as a portable backdrop for your event.
Honeycomb Wall — When you want to create a backdrop with something fresh. It's modular and can fit any space no matter how large or small!
Glass Block Panels — One of our recent featured products, these panels have all the retro charm of real glass blocks without the glass. Lightweight thermoplastics make these modular pieces sturdy and affordable.
Open Checkerboard Wall — Perfect for display against a cyc or pipe and drape. Immediately add texture to your setup using this layered product with bold lighting.
Bradford Covers — When you want to take the Bradford look to the next level without an expensive upgrade, try our Bradford Covers. We have countless styles to choose from and they fit right onto our existing product for a no-fuss setup.
Fabric Drops — One of the most affordable options is a boldly-lit white backdrop with minimal scenic pieces in front. Smart lighting (and projection) can make your project look a lot more costly than it actually is!
CyTower — Our most popular element is also our most versatile. CyTowers look great in any size but scale down particularly well. Any basic pipe & drape setup can be punched up with just a few CyTowers and some pars.
Stretched Fabric — For ultimate punch on the cheap, try one of our many Stretched Fabric pieces. These easy-to-use elements tie right onto your existing hanging points using white tie line and clips and can be lit creatively for maximum impact.
Podiums — If you want to spice up a simple setup, try using a sleek podium. Our Stretched Fabric Podium is lightweight, low-cost, and will take your presentation up a notch.
Leaf — Our most cost-effective framed fabric element. This product is perfect for framing your stage with an innovative (and thrifty) design. Our tension fabric is great for lighting options, giving you many looks with the same element.

Ask the Expert

Ask the Expert

Welcome to Ask The Expert, our brand-new column where we answer your show-related questions. My name is Spencer Hill, and with many years in the entertainment industry, I know the ins and outs of the business and want to help you have the best project possible. Please send your questions to expert@conceptdesigninc.com and maybe your question will be featured in next month's issue!

Q: Can I use projections on your elements? What's the best way to do this?

A: Absolutely! The majority of our scenic elements are made from translucent materials that take all types of light, including video, very well. While a screen is recommended for precise power point presentations or high-resolution detail, our products are a perfect match when you're looking for sizzle and texture.

The new DL3, for example, would work perfectly on our products. Our frost acrylic elements (Cy Towers, Luma Walls) naturally disburse projection light from the rear with minimal hot spotting. Elements with white tensioned fabric, Bradford Panels or Curls, have very high reflectivity and do wonders with front projection.

If you need digital scenery beyond the 'been there, done that' white wall, our elements paired with your favorite media server are fast, cheap, and will deliver the creative punch you need to make your clients say 'wow.'

Professionalism on Show Site

Professionalism on Show Site

The few days leading up to a big show can be hectic. There's so much to worry about — vendors arriving on time, budgets being met, not to mention having an event that clients will enjoy and remember long after the nametags come off. It's enough to make you crazy! That's why CDP is here to help with five great tips you can pass along to your team. We make it easier than ever to keep on top of it like a pro, while staying cool as a cucumber in the process!

Have A Plan

Planning is key. Know where you are going, who you are working with, and what 'Plan B' is should something go wrong. Do not assume anything. Get to know who's in charge and who's name is on your check. These folks are the people you work for. Do not modify your part of the project without their direction. (i.e., the lighting guy told me to move this here...) With a solid plan and clear lines of authority, you can be sure to deliver the right product every time.

Hurry Up And Wait

Arrive early. In this business more than most, time is money — a lot of money. Get there with time to spare and be ready to work at the first possible moment. Your enthusiasm goes a long way. For the occasional downtime, bring a book, a computer, or a silent solo entertainment medium. Our industry is notorious for demanding that you 'hurry up and wait.' Be prepared to go with the flow.

Walk the Walk

Your level of readiness on show site makes a big impression. Always dress the part. If you are a stagehand, dress safely and appropriately — show blacks are typically the norm. Bring your own tools. Even if you think you won't need them, you look like a pro when you take the extra effort. A final tip: remember that our work is highly laborious under hot lights and/or un-airconditioned ballrooms. Please take appropriate counter measures to avoid odoriferous emanations.

Stay Humble

You do not need to go around telling everyone how much you know, or how many shows you've done... a sure sign you don't know what you are doing. The truly experienced folks just get the job done. If you make a mistake, admit to it quickly, learn from it, and work to find solutions with your supervisors and/or clients. Finally, never belittle the newest or 'lowest guy on the ladder.' You were there once too, Cowboy.

Keep It Light

Keep your sense of humor even in times of stress. We all got into this industry because we like doing shows. Yes, there are issues with every project, but solving them is part of the fun. The old saying 'you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar' still applies. Positive team players are more productive, better regarded, and more likely to book that next job.
